Large-Scale Offshore Wind Project in the U.S. Now In Operation
In 2016, the U.S completed its first offshore wind project with a capacity of 30MW, located off the coast of Rhode Island. Significant strides have been made since then in order to drive North America towards clean energy, including the recent installation campaign for a 806 MW offshore wind farm, located off the coast of Massachusetts which is now in operation.
The large large-scale offshore wind project which began in September 2023, is currently generating sufficient energy to power 64,000 homes and is set to increase in capacity in the coming year following its substantial progress.
Earlier this year, the wind farm initially delivered approximately 68 MW from five turbines to the grid. This output has since expanded with an additional five turbines now in operation. Building on the 136 MW currently active, more power will be added to the grid, with each unit commencing production upon completing the commissioning process.
The wind farm has installed 47 foundations, transition pieces, and 21 turbines, with 10 turbines currently operational. This development is now providing enough clean energy to power over 64,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts, with the installation of an additional turbine currently underway.
The Growth of Offshore Wind
Until recently, the US wind energy market primarily focused on onshore developments, with only seven offshore wind turbines operational across two wind farms in total. However, significant progress is being made to expand offshore capacity on a much larger scale. The US offshore wind market recently saw the completion of another wind farm earlier this year off the coast of New York, boasting a 132 MW capacity across 12 turbines.
The Future of Offshore Wind in the US
Major industry players have announced further plans for another large-scale 924 MW wind farm, projected to generate enough clean energy to power nearly 600,000 New York households. This project, set to become New York’s largest offshore wind farm, has received the final permit from the US Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and is expected to be operational by 2026. Offshore construction is anticipated to commence later this year at the project site.
The project is expected to create 800 direct jobs in New York and thousands of indirect jobs. John R. Durso, president of the Long Island Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, stated, “Moving this project forward will help power our grid and our regional economy.”
