Leading Edge Protection (LEP) helps to combat leading edge erosion which is the single largest problem in relation to maintenance within the wind industry.
When in operation, a wind turbine blade tip can reach speeds of up to 330km/h, which greatly exposes the leading edge of a wind turbine blade to environmental factors, and ultimately erosion of the blade.
Whilst LEP can be installed once the leading edge of a blade is damaged, OEM’s look to install prior to the damage occurring, thus allowing proactive preventative measures to be applied – reducing costs.
Leading Edge Protection when installed, can greatly improve the lifespan of a blade, which in turn increases the AEP (Annual Energy Production) of the turbine.
LEP Application Methods
GEV Wind Power’s technical team contains several industry recognized specialists, across various LEP topics, from installations to the theory of LEP and aerodynamics of a blade.
GEV have recently launched a Training Academy close to their UK Head Office, where our in-field blade technicians are upskilled in the application of LEP solutions, following 3 successful major European campaigns for some of the world’s leading blade manufacturers.
GEV have experience working with several LEP solution providers and are seen as market leaders in the area of LEP installation. This has strengthened our relationships with the providers, and we are now actively sought to be their installer of choice, allowing us to price competitively during RFQ’s from our ever-expanding client portfolio.

LEP Repair, Maintenance & Upgrades
GEV have a breadth of knowledge and experience in relation to the repair of LEP. This is very much a different scope of work to installation, but encompasses the same solutions provided within LEP installations.
Our LEP services, also expand to the maintenance and upgrade of LEP solutions, previously applied to blades. Our expansive existing talent pool of technicians includes many in-field specialists in the area of maintenance and upgrades of LEP, with many having evolved from factory-based roles, into in-field specialists.
GEV Wind Power excel in this area, given our multitude of strong relations with LEP vendors and suppliers. In the event that a change of LEP product is required, we have the in-house capability, skills and knowledge, to provide clients with the suggested product, from an independent and un-biased perspective, from advice through to installation.
