Empowering women to join the wind industry – GEV Wind Power launches WindWOMEN initiative

GEV Wind Power has launched the ‘GEV WindWOMEN’ initiative in response to the growing interest expressed by women seeking careers within the wind sector, and the increasing need for qualified technical skills within the industry.

The initiative, led by wind turbine maintenance and repair company, GEV Wind Power, is designed to accelerate the careers of women in the wind industry and to support pathways into senior leadership positions within the industry, supporting wider efforts to break down barriers across the sector.

Over 2025, GEV will be raising awareness of the increasing opportunities available for individuals looking to break into the industry through new career programs, apprenticeships, and training opportunities with GEV Wind Power.

The initiative focuses on three key areas: early school engagement (Grass Roots); entry-level industry support (Welcome to Wind) and higher education/ career development (Internal Female Development Programme).

From the school bench to the turbine blade, GEV aims to engage all ages and offer dedicated opportunities to support career development within the wind industry.

Grass Roots:

‘Grass Roots’ is the first stage of the WindWOMEN initiative, dedicated to inspiring interest and initiating discussions around potential career paths within renewables.

Through early engagement with colleges and schools, active participation in local career events, and apprenticeship programmes, GEV is encouraging students to explore career opportunities in the wind industry.

By generating positive awareness of the diverse work opportunities available, GEV aims to accelerate the entry of interested students into the wind energy workforce, whilst challenging stereotypes surrounding technical roles.

Welcome to Wind:

‘Welcome to Wind’ is the second stage of the initiative, building on existing partnerships, training opportunities, and early career development to support women entering the industry.

GEV’s UK academy has seen major success through ongoing open sessions for entry-level technicians and will be expanding on these opportunities to accommodate more technicians in 2025. Since its inception in 2021, the academy has engaged with over 200 technicians through dedicated sessions, pre-project mobilization training, and upskilling.

Additional academy open sessions are set to take place in January 2025, encouraging new-to-industry female technicians to showcase their skills. The sessions will be supported by members of GEV’s in-field technical team, allowing women to connect with experienced technicians who successfully launched their careers through the same training program.

Internal Female Development Programme:

The ‘Internal Female Development Programme’ aims to develop structured mentorship and networking programs for women in the wind market, expanding on higher-education initiatives, career path mapping, and on-site experience to foster connections and build confidence within the industry.

“We recognise the value in having a diverse leadership team with unique skills and experiences, and how collective insights can help bring new perspectives into the wind industry. We hope that through promoting our opportunities we can encourage a greater uptake in leadership positions by women in wind.”

– Chris Sarel – UK/EU Managing Director

At GEV we are pleased to be playing an active role in bringing new opportunities into the sector and look forward to engaging with aspiring technicians across 2025.

GEV Wind Power will be connecting with local partnership organisations, colleges, and training providers to support the rollout of the new WindWOMEN initiative and ensure success.
